Hiking tours

Ilzenberg Manor invites you to go hiking. Where the histories of the Lithuanian and Latvian borders meet, where forests, lakes and ancient roads tell their silent stories, a hiking destination unfolds – a place for experience, discovery and the joy of movement. The Ilzenberg area offers hiking tours for all seasons and for those seeking different kinds of experiences. You can choose the symbolic and international “Around Lithuania” hike, the circular route of which winds around Lake Apvalasai, which reminds us of the contours of Lithuania, and is a part of Latvian territory. This is a hike where every step has meaning. For those seeking a more relaxed pace or a sightseeing trip, the “Along the Ilzenberg Paths” route is offered – a walk through the surroundings of the manor, historical sites, hillforts and natural spots, allowing you to feel the spirit of the manor’s land. For the more active ones and adventure lovers, Ilzenberg also serves as the starting or finishing point for TORA hikes – this is the place where the community, challenges and the shared joy of movement blend together. See. Experience. Hike.
Ilzenberg Manor is a place where a hike becomes more than just a route, and the path turns into a story that you create yourself.

“Around Lithuania” Hike

The Lithuanian–Latvian border has centuries-old witnesses to history, breath-taking landscapes and a vibrant natural world filled with the sounds, scents and tranquillity of wildlife. This is a place where history, nature and quiet adventure blend into one experience.

Go on a hike with the smart guide on your mobile device – it will help you discover historical and natural sites as you travel along picturesque paths through fields and forests. After a few hours of pleasant, interesting hiking, the circular route will bring you back to Ilzenberg Manor, where you can relax and share your impressions.

The name of the hike, “Around Lithuania”, was not chosen by chance – the contours of Lake Apvalasai resemble the borders of the Lithuanian state, and the route itself forms a symbolic circle. The route is accessible year-round, but in early spring or summer, some sections (near Petrukai Lake and the Užubaliai Hillfort) may be more challenging. We recommend these sections to experienced hikers who are not afraid of challenges, while others should simply choose a safer path to the next point on the route.

This is an international hike, a part of which extends into Latvian territory, allowing you to cross the state border in a single step and explore the history of the border region. You will visit unique places along the route:

  • a historic border crossing – the former Latvian customs building
  • a century-old linden tree-lined avenue
  • the Kacītė Lutheran Church
  • the legendary Kiaulių Traktatas (“The Hotel”)
  • Petrukai Lake
  • the Užubaliai Hillfort, also known as Kartuviai Hill
  • the home of the Užubaliai cider maker
  • the Onuškis Manor
  • the Alksniai Hillfort

This hike is a slow, meaningful journey that invites you not only to see but also to feel the spirit, history and tranquillity of the borderland.
